TL;DR
Your business could rank #1 on Google and still be missing when someone asks ChatGPT for a recommendation.
That’s the problem with AI visibility.
AI assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity don’t necessarily recommend the companies that rank highest on Google.
And traditional analytics can’t measure recommendations that never generate a click.
The good news? You can start measuring AI visibility without spending hundreds of dollars on another marketing tool.
1. Google Rankings No Longer Tell the Whole Story
Imagine someone asking ChatGPT:
“Who are the best commercial HVAC contractors in Austin?”
ChatGPT recommends four companies.
Your business ranks on Google’s first page but isn’t mentioned.
That customer may never discover you.
Ahrefs research has found that AI citations don’t consistently match Google’s top organic rankings.
And there’s another interesting finding.
In a study of 75,000 brands, Ahrefs found that unlinked brand mentions correlated more strongly with AI Overview visibility than raw backlink counts.
That doesn’t mean backlinks are dead or that mentions automatically improve AI visibility.
But it does suggest that your presence on review sites, industry publications, and other third-party sources deserves more attention.
SEO still matters. But SEO alone doesn’t tell you whether AI recommends your business.
2. AI Visibility Is Growing. But Don't Confuse It With Traffic.
Pew reported in June 2026 that 44% of U.S. adults use ChatGPT, up from 34% in 2025.
Adobe reported a 393% year-over-year increase in AI-referred retail traffic in Q1 2026.
Sounds impressive.
But AI referrals still represent a small percentage of total website traffic.
Here’s the bigger issue.
A buyer might ask Gemini to recommend accounting firms, get a shortlist, and later Google one of those companies directly.
Your GA4 reports the Google visit.
It doesn’t tell you that Gemini influenced the decision.
That’s why measuring AI visibility requires more than tracking website visitors.
3. How Do You Measure AI Visibility?
Start with the tools you already have.
Google Analytics 4: Track identifiable referrals from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and other AI assistants. Kuware’s step-by-step GA4 guide explains how.
Google Search Console: Use Google’s generative AI performance reporting to understand visibility within supported Google AI experiences.
AI visibility platforms: Tools like Otterly, Peec AI, Ahrefs Brand Radar, Semrush, and Profound monitor brand mentions, citations, and competitors across AI systems.
But before buying anything, try asking ChatGPT and Gemini the questions your actual customers would ask.
Repeat those questions over time. One AI response isn’t a reliable measurement.
And remember, being mentioned by AI isn’t the same as generating revenue.

Final Thought
For years, businesses asked:
“Where do we rank on Google?”
Now they need to ask another question:
“When someone asks AI for a company like ours, do we show up?”
Google rankings still matter.
But the buyer’s journey is changing, and traditional analytics don’t capture all of it.
Don’t chase another marketing acronym or buy another dashboard just because everyone else is doing it.
First, find out whether AI is recommending your business.
Then figure out whether improving that visibility can actually bring you customers.
Because the goal isn’t to rank in AI. It’s to be part of the buying decision.
